The trustees do not accept unsolicited proposals. Their grant-making focuses on a small portfolio of charities which receive sustained support over an extended period, working in two broad areas:
- Sustainable agriculture and food; tackling climate change, energy efficiency and renewable energy
- Youth work that supports the rehabilitation of young people involved in anti-social or criminal activities, and helps remove the barriers to social inclusion
The Trust works closely with the Ashden Trust and the JJ Charitable Trust on the Climate Change Collaboration, which supports projects seeking to reduce CO2 emissions quickly. The aim is to find ways to accelerate progress towards a low carbon society. Trustees require projects to work together to share their learning with each other and with key stakeholders.
The Trust is also a strong supporter of Divest Invest, which calls on investors – from sovereign wealth funds to institutional endowments and retirement fund holders – to divest from the fossil fuel industries and invest instead in climate solutions
